A statement of essential tenets of Christian and Reformed faith is basic to understanding what it is we give assent to in responding to the constitutional questions for ordination as teaching or ruling elders in Christ's Church.
Several presbyteries have developed such statements. Some include questions for candidates. The first item below offers a concise statement of essentials. This statement, with its supporting Scriptures, might be given to candidates with the single question, "Is there any statement among these that you cannot affirm?" If the candidate is unable to affirm any of the separate statements, that should be an indication that the candidate should proceed to examination by the full presbytery or session so that a fair and informed judgment of fitness for office can be made.
