In 1997,
presbyteries voted to place the “fidelity and chastity”
paragraph in the Book of Order as a standard for ordination
of officers. It was added as paragraph G-6.0106b by vote of our presbyteries.
The
1997 General Assembly immediately acted to remove G-6.0106b from the
Book of Order. Our presbyteries voted against the removal
of the standard.
In 2001,
the General Assembly once again proposed removal of G-6.0106b, and
once again our presbyteries voted to maintain the standard. The actual
percentages of presbytery votes:
- 1997:
to add G-6.0106b to the Book of Order: 57% voted to approve
- 1998:
proposed amendment to remove: 67% of presbyteries voted to retain
- 2002:
proposed amendment to remove: 73% of presbyteries voted to retain
